There are many common, minor illnesses or conditions our pharmacist can assess and write you a prescription for. Walk-Ins may be acceptable or book an appointment to speak to our pharmacist today.

ABOUT THE SERVICE

After a minor illness assessment, our pharmacist will advise you on how to best manage the illness. The Pharmacist may prescribe a treatment, recommend an over-the-counter treatment option, recommend self-care strategies, or refer you for further assessment.

Please note that registering for this assessment service does not guarantee a prescription.

Based on the pharmacist’s assessment and professional judgment, the treatment plan may include referral to another healthcare professional.

Minor Ailments: Headliner

CONDITIONS

Bladder/Urinary Tract Infection

(Uncomplicated UTI)

kidneys/ureters/bladder/urethra

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Frequent urination, pain while urinating and difficulty holding in urine

  • Pain in lower abdomen and a small amount of blood in the urine

  • Absence of vaginal discharge

  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine

Allergies/Stuffy Nose

(Allergic rhinitis)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Sneezing

  • Stuffy nose or runny nose

  • Itchy nose, eye, or throat

  • Typically, more than 7 days of continuous symptoms

Pink Eye

(Conjunctivitis)

  • Eye redness and difficulty opening eyes in the morning

  • Appearance of sticky or watery fluids from the eye

  • Mild scratching, itching, or burning sensation

  • Bright lights hurt your eyes

Menstrual Pain

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Pain and cramps in the lower abdominal area

  • Pain in the lower back and starting a few hours before onset of a period

  • Pain can last a few hours to days

Piles / Swollen Rectal Vessels

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Itching, burning or swollen (with or without pain) around the anal / rectum area

  • Bright red blood during / after bowel movement

  • Constipation and difficulty in having a bowel movement

  • Presence of a lump in the anal / rectum area

Skin Infection

(Impetigo)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Bump that changes into a blister surrounded by rash

  • Yellow discharge that dries to form a "golden" or "honey-colored" crust

  • Can affect face, arms or legs

Cold Sores

(Oral Herpes Labialis)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Rash or bump around border of the lip

  • Presence of clear, sticky fluid around the rash

  • Itching, tingling, or burning may lead to the rash

  • Redness or inflamed skin around the rash

Oral Fungal Infection

(Oral Thrush)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • White or creamy-white spots / patches on the lips, inside of mouth, tongue and / or the roof of the mouth

  • Cottage cheese-like appearance

  • Patches can be scraped off

  • Dry mouth and / or loss of taste

Skin Rash

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Dry, red, and itchy skin

  • Cracked and oozed blisters

  • Darker or lighter patches of skin

  • Scaly and patchy skin

Heartburn/Acid Reflux

(Dyspepsia)

gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Burping / stomach acid rise from the stomach into the mouth

  • Burning feeling in the stomach or lower chest rising to the neck

  • Trouble getting a good night's sleep because of heartburn

  • Pain in the middle of the upper stomach area

  • Nausea

Muscle Aches & Pains

(Musculoskeletal injury)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Pain, swelling or tenderness (light to medium)

  • Redness or bruising

  • Limited motion and muscle weakness

  • Injury is associated with overworking or muscle / joint injured

Insect Bites & Itch

eg. mosquito, duck mite, spider, bee/wasp

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Small bump or blister. May feel pain, itching, redness or swelling.

  • Feeling of a sharp burning pain which can sting

Tick Bite

(Prevention of Lyme Disease)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Tick bite by black-legged tick

  • A red lump present, but swelling, blistering, bruising, itching or other infections may develop

  • Mild allergic reaction (hives, rash, and light swelling at the bite site)

Acne

(Acne Vulgaris)

blackheads/whiteheads/pustules/pimples

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Whiteheads and/or blackheads, or

  • Small red bumps and pimples filled with pus

  • Fewer than 30 bumps/pimples and not all inflamed (red/swollen)

Skin Infections

You may experience some of the conditions below:​

  • Jock itch

  • Athlete’s foot

  • Ringworm

Headache

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Pain, tightness and pressure on both sides of head and across forehead of mild to moderate intensity with no nausea or vomiting

Mouth Sores

(Oral Ulcers)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Small, shallow, painful, recurrent lesions on lining inside the mouth, cheek or on the tongue

  • Lesions usually have red border with white or yellow centre

Shingles

(Herpes zoster)

You may experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Painful, blistering rash on one side of body, and

  • Pain, burning, tingling or numbness around affected area 1-5 days before rash appears

  • Discomfort, muscle pain, headaches

Nicotine Dependency

(Smoking Cessation)

Start on a free 12-week course of nicotine patches, lozenges or gum, or oral medications such as varenicline or bupropion, which you may have to pay for some or all of, depending on your PharmaCare coverage.

Worm Infections
