BENEFITS OF RAPID TESTS
Rapid Test & Trace Goals
Help Canadians get rapid tests to fight COVID-19
Quickly increase daily rapid testing across Canada
Develop an information hub and reference site for COVID-19 information and prevention
Rapid tests are viewed as a critical tool to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Canada. The primary benefits of rapid tests include:
the ability for non-professionals to perform the testing
lower cost compared to PCR tests
faster turnaround times
These beneficial characteristics of rapid testing mean the rapid tests can become more widely used as a screening tool for COVID-19, which is particularly important in Canada, where COVID-19 vaccines need to be imported and have experienced distribution delays. It also helps people return to work or school faster after the appearance of symptoms, allowing Canadians to return to normal faster.

INTENDED USE
Types of tests
There are 2 kinds of tests: diagnostic and screening tests.
Diagnostic tests, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, can confirm if someone has COVID-19, with results available in 24 to 48 hours.
Screening, through the use of rapid detection tests (RADTs, or rapid tests), can potentially identify positive cases earlier (within 15 minutes) to help reduce the spread of the virus and prevent outbreaks. When used regularly, rapid tests may help identify individuals who may be infectious early on. Individuals can be pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic but still carry the virus and may transmit it to others.
Those receiving a positive rapid test result should seek a PCR test as soon as possible for a confirmatory diagnosis. This also allows local public health authorities to identify the nature of the virus and track variants of concern. Please follow all isolation and quarantine advice given by public health officials while you wait for test results.
A COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device is an in vitro diagnostic rapid test for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigen (Ag) in human nasal swab specimens from individuals who meet COVID-19 clinical and / or epidemiological criteria. Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device is for professional use only and is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The test provides preliminary test results. Negative results don’t preclude SARSCoV-2 infection and they cannot be used as the sole basis for treatment or other management decisions. Negative results must be combined with clinical observations, patient history, and epidemiological information. The test is not
intended to be used as a donor screening test for SARS-CoV-2.
